My Aunt Grace Ridgell passed away on 5 March at the age of 93. Her passing marks the last of my aunts and uncles from what once was a long list. Grace was married to my Uncle Lester whom I always respected and enjoyed his company. Wish he hadn’t died so young.
Grace worked on Base supervising a crew of men as the head of Grounds Maintenance long before it was a contracted out function. I ran into one of her employees awhile ago who asked me if I was related to Grace. When I told him she was my aunt, he said “She was one tough lady.”
Grace was indeed a very strong and resilient lady who right up to her last days was still sharp as a tack. I visited her on her birthday last September and found her to be just as engaged, determined and strong as always. When I asked her what her secret to living a long life was, she dismissed me by saying “J.Scott, I don’t think about things like that.” It got me wondering if maybe that is the secret – to not think about it.
