A friend of mine who used to work for the St. Mary’s City Commission once told me of an old letter they had found. The letter was from one of the early settlers and was written to his relatives back in England. The author of the letter was describing what life was like here in St. Maries. He noted that it was a rather peaceful and pleasant colony except for the outer areas of Ridge and Bushwood where the locals tended to become a little rowdy at times. Funny how that twig-bent, tree-grows thing is true isn’t it?
I was reminded of this when I saw a column by Bill Moody (on the County website ) that lists some of his favorite restaurants in the County. He specifically mentions one in the First District and one in the Seventh District.
Mr. Moody praises our South County “legendary” restaurant Courtney’s. Here’s an excerpt from his review:
Inside are dark paneled walls with fading posters of families of fish, photos of various luminaries and so forth. Menus are bifold plastic affairs with selections that haven’t changed forever. I think they have some of, if not the best fried rockfish in the county. The owners Tom and Julie have also been there “forever” she in the back and Tom in the front.
Mr. Moody then mentions another of my favorite waterfront restaurants also off the beaten path over in the 7th District – Morris Point . Bill does a nice job describing what a nice place Morris Point is and how dining there “it’s almost like you’re at your neighbors for dinner.” (P.S. Bill doesn’t mention anything about the neighbors being rowdy.)
