Lose The Girl – Win the Contest

OK, one more Beatles-related post and then I’ll let it be. (Get it?)

I first heard “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl” on the Beatles “Help” album (shown above) that I won from a WPTX movie promotion contest.  Dickie Cullison and I were employed at St. Michael’s School painting the classrooms one summer. WPTX had a contest where if you listened all day long and made note of the first Beatles song that they played right after each hourly news cast and then called in when they told you to do so with the correct list, you would win the new “Help” album.     (Note the word “Promo” etched in the upper right hand corner of the album above.)

Dickie and I were down the school hall painting the 7th grade classroom when PTX announced late in the afternoon that it was time to call in your list of songs to see if you were a winner.  I remember running down the school hall to the payphone by the office and hastily calling WPTX to give them my list.  I couldn’t believe it when the DJ told me that I was the winner.  (In retrospect, think that I was probably the one and only noodnik in the County at the time who would spend all day listening to WPTX and making a list of Beatle songs played every hour.  So, need to keep my pride in check I guess.)
Couple nights later I went to a dance at the Ridge K of C and sure enough, Jay Dameron and the Montels covered “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl.”  In my mind today I can still see Jay singing that song and being impressed at how great a job he and the rest of the Montels did covering it. To this day, every time I hear this song, that memory comes back.
