Trick question for you “How many days are there in Lent?” If you said 40 then you’re with the majority of responders and liturgically you are correct. However, the actual number of days between Ash Wednesday and Easter is 46 (click here for explanation why.)
Subject came up the other day at Buzzy’s Country Store when Winkie, JW, Herbie and Bart were discussing how Buzzy would observe Lent by giving up drinking only to resume doing so on Sundays. Buzzy correctly noted that Sundays were not considered part of Lent and hence you could dispense with whatever fasting you were doing. Pope Buzzy had it figured out all along. Only Lent joke I know goes “I tried to give up self-deprecation for Lent, but then I realized I wasn’t very good at it.” Obviously.
