Buzzy and Rod

I learned that the Twilight Zone was listed as #5 on TV Guide’s list of best series of all time (click here.)  (If you are curious but don’t want to hit the link, Sopranos, Seinfeld, Lucy and All in the Family were the four ahead of Twilight Zone.)  Showing my age, Rod Sterling’s show was one of my favorites and I still can recall many of the plots and stories covered in all of Twilight Zone’s black and white glory.

Buzzy Looking a Little Ghostly (Photo by Kim Wiley)

I bring this up because we had a Rod Sterling moment in Buzzy’s Country Store last Sunday evening.  Two ladies came into the Store and as one of them was talking to me at the counter, the other asked Herbie McKay about the man in the photo on the chimney.  After Herbie informed her that it was Buzzy she immediately left.  The lady at the counter followed her friend out the door to check on her and came back in to tell Herbie that her friend was a clairvoyant who could see ghosts.  Her friend said that she had to leave the Store because she could see the man in the photo standing right there next to the bench in front of the chimney where his photo was hung.  Herbie relayed this to me and I got to confess that it gave me goose bumps.

Now I don’t necessarily believe in ghosts, but I don’t completely dismiss the possibility of them being around either.  In the 5 years since my father’s passing, through the many hours that I have tooled around in the Store and worked in his apartment where he lived, I have not felt his presence or any ghost-like Buzzy sensations with the following exception.  Whenever I am behind the counter and the Store is crowded with several friends laughing and joking and having a good time, ‘Partying” if you will, I’ll think to myself “Now Buzzy would be glad about this, that folks are here having fun and partying.”  It’s then that I get a little sensation that he’s right there by my side, nodding his approval, giving me the thumbs up and saying “Make sure they pay for that beer.”
Maybe he’ll make an appearance tonite at Robbie Norris’ b’day party at the Store.  (Not sure if I hope that the clairvoyant makes a return visit though.)  Buzzy would have been 90 today.
