Here is something I saw recently on Massey’s “You Know You’re From St. Mary’s” Facebook site and it helped clarify something for me.
I had always heard that the smokehouse was one of Civil War-era buildings. However as Brenda notes above, it was built after the war. On the old lithograph of the Pt. Lookout Hospital/Prison Camp (below) you can see a small building that resembles the smokehouse and is labelled in the photo’s legend as being Spaulding’s Photographic Gallery. (Pretty cool that they had a Photo Gallery don’t you think?) I’ve hilited it here in the upper right corner.
I then enlarged it to get a better view of it.
