Rainy Day I Do's

June is also THE wedding month.  Various reasons for June’s wedding popularity range from something to do with the Roman goddess Juno to it being that time of year when the weather is nicest (click here.)  Usually June weather is not too bad rain-wise.  However, back when I used to take wedding photos, I learned very quickly that rainy days and weddings were not a good combination regardless the month they occurred.  In fact, wet weddings were a royal pain in the butt.

I used to dread going to the bride’s house in the middle of a rain storm knowing that the entire household would be in full throttle, freak out mode.  I would try and calm the bride down by telling her the old superstition that every rain drop represented a penny from heaven and it was a good thing to have it rain on her wedding day because that meant she was going to have lots of money (click here.)  (I recited that once to a very upset bride only to have her father interject “That’s a lot hooey cause it poured the day your mother and I got hitched and we still don’t have a pot to pee in.”  I told Dad “Come on work with me here.  I’m trying to calm her down.”)

But in addition to dealing  with an upset, unhappy bride and wedding party, as the official photographer you then have to transport all your equipment in and out of the rain all day long.  Umbrellas don’t work very well when you need both hands to lug stuff in and out of the bride’s house, the church, the reception etc. and accordingly you get soaked.

Bottom line – rain was and is always a wedding day mess for everyone in general but for the poor photographer in particular.

So, when I saw how well this wedding went down in the rain, I recognized how good a job the photographer Kamila Harris did in capturing these moments for the wet but happy couple.
