Gin Blossoms Pt. 2

After posting the Gin Blossoms Hey Jealousy tune yesterday, I spent some time seeing what they were up to.  They are still around, still touring and will be in Annapolis next month.  May just have to check them out.

Uproxx Sports did this NCAA Tourny playoff of 90’s bands and the Gin Blossoms won it all.  I thought that that was quite an accomplishment until I saw who they beat out – Spice Girls, Boyz II Men, TLC.  Never realized that the 90’s had such suck ass music.  (That said however, Nirvana, who is not on this list and Counting Crows who did make the list, more than held their own in the 90’s.  I’ll even grant that Hootie and the Blowfish wasn’t all that bad either.)  But just look over who else is on this list and you’ll see what I mean about suck ass.

From Uproxxsports.com

Found this recent interview conducted by Pat Monahan lead singer of Train.  You can skip the first 3 minutes of it and get to the Blossoms’ part of the interview.  At the 12:20 point in the interview they discuss firing their lead guitarist and main songwriter Doug Hopkins who wrote their biggest songs but was a major alcoholic.  That his songs were the ones that became their biggest hits after Doug killed himself makes the whole thing that much sadder and messier.

Gin Blossoms had several other great songs including this one that I often think about whenever Buzzy’s Rita Weaver walks into the Store: For story on this semi-true tune (click here.)  For video (click here.)

But if I had to pick one of their songs for the desert island mix tape it would be this one that I’ve thought about a lot whenever a former “friend” crosses my mind. Just as I do with the emotion jealousy though, I’m quick to shoo any thoughts of her away from my door. Still, this song will make me think of her;  hope you enjoy it, bitch. (On second thought, perhaps I shouldn’t include this on my mix tape.)
