Like Springsteen says “sooner or later it comes down to money” and the business side of me understands completely the math of 65 folks @ $40 beats the heck out of 65 @ $25. (Buzzy’s was receiving a discounted group rate. I fully appreciate that the $1,000 difference in income for the cruise folks is a good chunk of change. Thus, I completely get why they did what they did decision-wise.)
However, the Ridge boy side of me that doesn’t do smart business stuff is more than a little pissed that they would do us like this. Granted, business is business, but this would have marked the third consecutive year that Buzzy’s has filled their boat up to make this trip. They agreed to take us on the 29th but have now reneged on that because they got a better offer. It ain’t right and as Buzzy used to say a man is only as good as his word. Obviously the Smith Island word is only as good as the money involved.
I say, in life you get what you give. So my message to the Smith Island cruise folks is:
Buzzy’s Country Store won’t be organizing any future trips to your middle of nowhere island just to eat at your over priced restaurant and walk around to see how shittily you live there. P.S. The Ridge boy in me is tempted to wish that it rains and blows its ass off on the 29th forcing you to cancel the trip. However, since bad weather like that will also negatively impact my business I am not going to advocate for that. After all, it’s nothing personal mind you, it’s just business right?
