The Holy Trinity (No, Has Nothing to Do With the Pope)

Speaking of the County Fair, Robert Mattingly was in Buzzy’s Country Store yesterday taking a break from it.  As a member of the Leonardtown Lions Club, Robert worked at the Fair Thursday night, Friday and is scheduled to be back again Sunday.  With Saturday free, he decided to ride down Buzzy’s and touch base with his brother-in-law Bob Mann.  I told Robert that I liked the fact that he knew just where to find Bob.

Later, as things quieted down post-4 o’clock club, we got to talking music and Robert cited the Holy Trinity of local talent – the Nighthawks, Jimmy Thackery and Danny Gatton.

In honor of that trio then, first something from the Nighthawks featuring co-founders Mark Wenner and back then lead guitarist Jimmy Thackery:

Thackery left the Nighthawks in 1987 and continues to play and tour (as does the Nighthawks.)
And of course any discussion of local talent will inevitably land on Danny Gatton whom Robert discussed and relayed several stories about.  It was somewhat ironic that Robert mentioned Danny because he is always on my mind at this time of year.  Danny played on Steve Erwin’s song In Fall which I have previously discussed (click here.)

That song stirs up a memory or two of someone I once knew and always takes me to a bluesed-out place in my mind.   The lyrics, Steve’s voice and Danny’s playing all combine to make it just maybe the saddest, but most beautiful song that I know of.   That Danny died (suicided) on 4 October makes it even sadder to listen to.

But not to leave you on a down note, here for you is something a little more uplifting from Danny:
