Ron

Ron and Daughter Ryan Watching Ball Game

Been thinking bout my buddy Ron Edwards a lot here lately for a couple reasons, one good and one sad.

First the good one.  Anytime Peyton Manning is in the news I always recall my first encounter with him when Ron and I attended a Tennessee-Arkansas football game back in 97.  (I have discussed this previously (click here.))   Peyton has lived up to be exactly what Ron predicted back then for him “He’s going to be one hell of a pro.”

But the second reason that I have been thinking of Ron is a sad one because it centers around Glenn Frey.

Once when Ron and I were driving back to Little Rock from the race track in Hot Springs we got to talking bout old flames.  He mentioned an old girl friend and described her as “the one that got away.”  I knew who he was referring to and always kind of thought the same thing because she was a very nice lady and she and Ron seemed like they were good together.  I asked him  “Whatever became of her?”

Ron said “She married some officer on Base, became a Navy wife and moved away.”

He then sighed and said  “My oh my but you sure know how to arrange things, you set it up so well so carefully.  Ain’t it funny how your  new life didn’t change things, You’re still the same old girl you used to be.”

We then drove on in silence for the next few miles and without Ron saying another word to me on the subject, I knew exactly what he was talking about.

Thus, every time that Lying Eyes song is played, and it’s been played a lot these past couple days in memory of Glenn Frey’s death, I think of Ron and that conversation.

(Ron passed away in 2006 from a heart attack.  Like Glenn he went out of here way too soon.)
