Just Another Day in New York

Saw where former UN Secretary Boutros Boutros-Ghali died at the age of 93.  Brought back a memory for me of being in New York City once upon a time and seeing him and hearing him speak.

I was in New York the first weekend of November when they run the New York City Marathon.   I went to Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral that Sunday morning of the Marathon.   Turned out that it was a special Mass for the UN Delegates.  Boutros, who was Secretary General of the UN at the time addressed the group when it was time for the homily.

All of the UN Delegate attendees were dressed up and the place was packed.  I went up to take Communion just to check everyone out and see if I recognized anyone else. (I didn’t recognize anyone of course, although I think I did see Madeleine Albright who was our UN rep at the time.)

After Mass, later on that afternoon, I caught the end of the NY City Marathon as the runners completed the race in Central Park.   And yes, some Ethiopian won then too.  In fact, I think 3 out of the top 4 finishers that year were from Ethiopia.  Those dudes can run.

Finally, that evening after having dinner, as I walked back to my hotel, all traffic and pedestrian crossing was held up as a motorcade made its way up the avenue.  I asked the NY City cop in front of us “Who is in the motorcade?” and he said “President Clinton.”

I replied “Wow, you had the UN Delegate Mass in the morning, the Marathon in the afternoon and a Presidential motorcade tonite, some day huh?”   Without pausing the cop simply said “Just another day in New York City.”

I’d play a Car 54 video for you but here’s something funnier from Ali G.

Here’s one from Marshall Crenshaw off of what may well be my “Desert Island LP.”
