Hawaii-Maryland Connection

Terps vs Hawaii Warriors today for a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.  Been pulsing my Hawaii connection for info but she’s sort of neutral – good Maryland lass that she is.

Ryan is the oldest of Mom and Dad’s 12 grandchildren – so I guess you could say that she officially made them “Grand” but unofficially, we all knew that anyway.

Here is a photo of the Hawaii section of Buzzy’s Country Store located on the side of the beer case:

And while we are talking Hawai’i here, I find that I have been misspelling the word for years.  Like just about everyone else, I too have omitted  the apostrophe between the two i’s.  Actually, it is not really an apostrophe but is an ‘okina – a reverse apostrophe (click here.)   ( I was too lazy to try and find a real ‘okina in the special characters file so just pretend that my apostrophe is actually an ‘okina.)

The ‘okina is used to indicate a glottal stop or pause before you say the next syllable.  The correct pronunciation is hah why` ee with the emphasis on the ending ee sound.

Makes me think that we should have one in our name too i.e. Mary’land.  That way folks wouldn’t butcher it by saying something that comes out sounding like Murland.

This video seemed appropriate.
