This past Saturday in Buzzy’s Country Store I was pleasantly surprised when several visitors rolled in thru the course of the day despite the yucky weather outside. I had initially thought that it was going to be a slow day. However, as it turned out, it was one of my busier and more interesting days visitor-wise.
First in were a couple of birdwatchers. They had been down to Pt. Lookout to do some birdwatching but because of the rain did not have much success. They informed me that birds are like people in that they roost and lay low when its raining. However, once it stops raining then they are everywhere. My visitors were hoping for that scenario which never eventuated.
But as I continued to talk with them I learned that they didn’t really care about seeing any birds and that they had an ulterior motive. They were in town visiting their family to celebrate a wedding and used the bird watching as an excuse to get away for a couple hours.
Two couples then dropped in and I recognized one of the ladies because she had been in before. She and her family stay in one of Peggy’s rentals every Thanksgiving for a family reunion/Thanksgiving celebration. Her brother came in the Store post-party one year and informed me that one of his sisters, who had moved away from the area, had enjoyed the scene on the Bay in Peggy’s house so much that it had inspired her to move back home and buy some waterfront.
As the lady introduced herself to me Saturday, I asked if she was the sister who had moved back home following one of the get togethers. She said she was and that her brother’s story was correct. She currently resides on Mill Creek.
Next in the Store were 3 older ladies who strolled in and milled around picking out some postcards to purchase. When I asked them where they were from, one of the ladies said “Chaptico originally but Sante Fe now.” She then proceeded to tell me that she had just come “home” to purchase her gravesite at Sacred Heart Church. She got emotional as she told me this and explained that it was the last gravesite available in the Sacred Heart cemetery.
Trying to switch the conversation away from the purchase of gravesites, I asked her how she had gotten from Chaptico to Sante Fe. She told me that her mother moved to Mexico after she was born and that for her first six or seven years she was raised by her grandmother in Chaptico. That is why she always considered Chaptico to be home. When she turned seven she moved to Sante Fe to rejoin her mom. “But now I will be back home forever.” I wanted to follow up some more with her but my Four O’clock Club was rolling in so I broke away to wait on them. The three ladies paid for their postcards and left.
Another trio of visitors then came in, grabbed a couple of beers and a glass of wine and pulled up a chair to sit awhile with the 4 O’clock boys. Turns out that they were originally from South Dakota where the gentleman had worked for the highway department. He was from eastern South Dakota and his wife was from the western side of the state. They had read the Buzzyblog and asked how I had made out with the Liquor Board following the Governor’s visit. I told them that I have to go before the Board next Thursday.
As the trio said goodbye, I then greeted a couple from Wisconsin who had been in the Store some time ago. The lady had grown up in a country store in northern Wisconsin. Saturday they returned with several of their family members to include the guy’s Mom. I asked Mom if she had done an absentee ballot for the primary election. She said no but she would have voted for Ted Cruz. (Will have to see how my sample of one Wisconsin voter projects today’s results.)
Thus, despite the lousy weather Saturday, it was a fun day at the Store meeting and talking to all these folks. Buzzy used to say that everyone has a story to tell if you just take some time to listen to them. That certainly was the case Saturday. I hope all of these folks make a return visit soon.
