Talking Baseball – For the Birds

Shea, Reagan and Me at Yankee Stadium

Time for my month’s end baseball recap.  First the good news – that we are still talking and thinking about baseball as we roll into October is a good thing.  That means that our teams are at least still in the mix for post-season play and we have a reason for hope.

The Nats are in but continue to play for home field advantage for at least one of their post-season series.  Of course their hoped-for championship match up with the Cubs would be based home-field wise in Chicago,  but keep your fingers crossed that the Nats first can shake their playoff jinx and get there.   Nats are projected to open against the Dodgers who hold a 5-1 record against them this season when they have met.

(Re: Cubs-Nats anticipated/potential matchup, in sports it always seems like those hoped-for matchups rarely eventuate.  Chances are one of them won’t make it.  Actually, it probably would be better for the Nats if they did not have to play the Cubs and squared off against some other team instead.)

After losing 4 in a row to the Red Sox last week, and their bats gone stone cold, the O’s surrendered any shot at winning the division.  They now are smack in the middle of the race for one of the two wild card slots.  After last night’s great come-from-behind win over Toronto who knows where Orioles’ magic could take them?   Another big game set tonight against Toronto.

Don’t know why, and with no reasonable reason since they have stopped hitting like they once were, nevertheless I have a good feeling about the O’s chances here.  They are way overdue to start hitting again as a team and their pitching has been good.  Being the pessimist, or maybe that should be the realist that I am however, I am usually wrong whenever I get these feelings about how well my team can or should do.  So stay tuned but go O’s!  Time for some magic – again!
