Birds on the Roof of My Mother’s House

For reasons you will see, I’ve been a little reluctant to write this post.  However, since I have been doing this “bird theme” the past couple days here on the Buzzyblog, I figured maybe it was time to relate this also.

It’s about my Mom and the fact that she is 86 years old and keeps saying that she is ready to go.  And by “go” she is not talking about to the bathroom or out to lunch; she’s talking “go” as in dying.  When she makes comments along these lines, I simply tell her that she’s in good shape and can easily make it to 100.  She always responds with “Lord, I don’t want to.”

So when I pulled into my Mom’s driveway awhile back and saw three huge black birds perched on the roof of her house it startled me some.  I don’t know if they were crows, buzzards or vultures or just what they were, but they looked very ominous sitting up there as they were.  I hit the horn to try and shoo them away but they ignored me and stayed where they were as if they knew I couldn’t do anything about them being up there.

Entering Mom’s kitchen door, I announced myself as I usually do with “Anybody home?”  Not receiving an answer, I continued thru her living room and back to her bedroom to find her asleep on her bed.  At least I hoped she was asleep.  Those damn birds sitting up there had me spooked along with the fact that Mom doesn’t usually take naps during the day.

I approached her quietly and slowly but my mind was already racing ahead to what I would do if indeed she wasn’t just sleeping.  As I was about halfway into her bedroom however, she stirred a little and while it startled me when she did so, I was immediately relieved to see that she was just sleeping.

Not wanting to wake her, I slipped back out of her room, wrote her a note that I’d been there and left.  As I pulled away though I noticed that the 3 feathered fellows were no longer perched up on her roof.

Mom later drove down to the Store and  chided me for not waking her up.  I laughed and said that she looked so peaceful that I didn’t want to disturb her.  Without pausing she said “Well you should have,  I could have been dead.”  I laughed in agreement with her but didn’t bother to inform her that that thought had indeed crossed my mind.
Later, curious about this theory of birds-and-death-connections, I did some searching and found this good article (click here.)  Here is an excerpt:

Sting has a song Lazarus Heart about his mother’s passing where he discusses the following:
Birds on the roof of my mother’s house
I’ve no stones that chase them away
Birds on the roof of my mother’s house
Will sit on my roof someday

Some powerful other lyrics in Lazarus Heart are shown here in this video:
