Queen of Hearts

Several years ago, Bob Mayes (above) used to store his boat at Buzzy’s Country Store.  In between taking his boat out to fish, Bob would have a few beers in Buzzy’s.  Bob told me about operating a pub called the Cumberland Democrat Club and would keep me updated on how things were going up his way in Western Maryland.

I recall him once telling me about a Queen of Hearts drawing they had started doing and how it was a popular success for them.  That was the first time that I had ever heard of the Queen of Hearts raffle.  Bob explained how it worked and I remember thinking that it all sounded too complicated.  However, Bob assured me that it was a very big money maker for them.

As I noted, Bob’s telling me about this was the first I had ever heard about the Queen of Hearts.  One thing is for sure however, it would not be the last I heard about it.  In the 10 years that I have owned and operated the Store, I’d say that the Queen of Hearts (QoH’s) is up there as Number Uno when it comes to items discussed in Buzzy’s Country Store.

I souped up the trusty Google machine to try and ascertain just how the QoH’s came to be.  Who originated it?   While I could not find anything on that issue, I did have a lot of hits having to do with just about every Podunk VFW and American Legion having a QoH’s with over $X number of dollars.  (I found one worth over $5M (click here.)

Just to follow up on Bob and his Democrat Club’s QoH’s efforts, they are now running King of Diamonds’ drawings.

I am certain that the odds are the same as they are for the QoH’s, but I’m thinking that the King is easier to find than is the Queen.  (Check this video out and see if that isn’t Eddie Murphy making a cameo.)

All of this is a preamble to the Ridge American Legions Queen of Hearts drawing tonite for over $60,000. You have to get your hand stamped early to be in the Legion Hall by the 7 p.m. drawing.

So get your stamp earlier, come to Buzzy’s to drink for awhile and then head back up to the Legion just before 7 to win the prize. Should you win the $60,000, I won’t blame you nor hold it against you if you don’t return back to Buzzy’s.
