Someone in Buzzy’s Country Store commented that the 4th of July was the wrong date to celebrate our independence. He noted that the correct date should be either 2 July or 4 August but not on the 4th of July. Sounding a little like Archie chastising Meathead, I told the guy “That sounds un-American.”
I did some digging and found that my complainer was correct. While our Continental Congress decided on 2 July to declare independence from Britain, most of the actual signing of the Declaration of Independence occurred on 4 August (click here for related story. Excerpt follows:)
