Opening Day

Here are two words sure to get my motor running – opening day.  Life is always just a little bit better on opening day.  Baseball is back.  For the next several months it will with us and serve as a relief to take our minds off of life’s other crapola that crops up.  As Boswell notes in

his book

“The crowd and its team had finally understood that in games, as in many things, the ending, the final score, is only part of what matters. The process, the pleasure, the grain of the game count too.”

Like life, baseball is a long season of ups and downs.  But on opening day everyone is optimistic.  Every team is undefeated and anything can happen.  Baseball’s reality check as to which teams ARE going to have a good season and which ones won’t, will set in as the season progresses.  But on opening day – all is equal parts hope and joy.

As for predictions, the folks who claim to know have the Orioles looking at a very long season while the Nationals figure to be in the thick of things.  To quote our leader “There was no collusion.”  Oops, wrong quote.  “We’ll just have to see what happens.”

Hypnotic Eye was Tom’s last album released in 2014.  On the album he included this tune  about a fire destroying his house (click here.)  (Stay to the message at the end with its good advice.)
