Congrats to Gary Rogow owner of ABC Liquors in California, Maryalnd who was recently named as Maryland’s Retailer of the Year. The following is from June’s Beverage Journal.

As I wrote in his nomination package for the award, Gary is very deserving of it because he not only deals with issues on a national and state level, but also he is very helpful to those of us here in the County who have liquor establishments. When I first took over Buzzy’s Country Store it was folks like Brian Tarleton, Paul Choporis, and David Dent who were very helpful to me with their advice and assistance in my learning the ins and outs of the business. (I already knew about the drinking and law enforcement side of the business from some first hand (mostly negative) experience.
I also consulted with Gary when I took over Buzzy’s. However, because I did not know him previously as I did the other guys I mentioned above, I approached him cautiously thinking that he wouldn’t really be too interested in me wasting his time. However, it was the complete opposite in that Gary was very helpful and always made me feel like I wasn’t wasting his time. My first impression of him is the one I retain today “Gary is good guy.”
However, I may have to re-evaluate my opinion of him. Talking to him the other day, he informed me that he was nominating me to serve as President of our County MSLBA. (This is one of those nominations where there is no other nominee and by default the one and only nominee becomes the stuckee.) I tried to beg off but Gary said “No way. You nominated me so now I’m nominating you.”
As I walked out of ABC Liquors, the old saying “No good deed goes unpunished” ran through my mind. Despite Gary’s payback, I’m still glad I nominated him and he received the award accordingly. As for my becoming President of the St. Mary’s County MSLBA maybe I’ll just pull a Donald Trump on ’em and screw things up so badly that they will have to impeach me!
