Graduation of Sorts (8th Grade, Marriage and Folk Music)

At my Grandson Shawn’s 8th grade graduation the other day I had to interact with the ex-wife and as it turns out it was an ok situation.  As a matter of fact, I was pleasantly surprised that I came away from it not feeling anything at all one way or the other about having to deal with her again.  Keep in mind that it’s only taken me 20 some years to get to this point, but hey, on some things I am a little slow at getting to you know?

Also, the more I thought about it, Shawn’s graduation ceremony in a weird way reminded me a little of my marriage to her: it started out kind of good, then got very long and tedious in the middle and ultimately at the end, I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

During the graduation ceremony, close to 400 kids were introduced and then almost that many more were recognized and given awards for b.s. things like Citizenship.  For me, the 2 hour-plus ceremony, like my first marriage, was an experience to be endured and then quickly forgotten.  In life, you do what you got to do even if you didn’t want to do it in the first place.

On this day in rock history Dylan recorded Like a Rolling Stone which is still ranked by many as the greatest rock and roll song of all time.  The tune was released on 20 July 1965 and 5 days later Bob played it live at the infamous Newport Folk Festival in July 1965 where he was booed for not playing folk music (Click here.)  The following video is from a subsequent performance where you can hear someone in the audience yelling out “Judas” at the beginning because Bob had gone electric.
