Ice Storm of 94

After talking yesterday about how nice the weather has been I went looking for articles and info on previous January and February weather here in the County.  I landed on the Enterprise’s 2/16/94 Ice Storm coverage (click here.)

It brought back a lot of bad memories weather and otherwise.  An iced up tree limb snapped the power line to our house and we were among the 35,000 without power.  Because there were only a handful of us (me and the neighbors on our street) affected by this outage we were low pri as Smeco worked restoring power to more populous areas that were also without power.  Bottom line, we went over a week before power was restored.

The ex and I were not doing well to begin with as she had just informed me that she was going to be moving out as soon as she found a place.  I remember praying to the Big Guy to send me a sign on how to proceed.  Then, when the tree limb fell and snapped the electric line shortly after her outta here conversation, I remember just shaking my head and thinking “OK, you sent me a sign.  Now please explain it to me.”

On the plus side of things about the storm, the front page of the above Enterprise also had a great article on how Raley’s Market provided help and assistance during the storm:

A resident of RoDo Beach Dick Metz wrote a letter to the editor thanking the Raleys and others in the First District for helping one another out during the storm (click here.)  Very nice gesture on Dick’s part.  Note the two sentences that I hi-lited.

At Buzzy’s Country Store without power, he had several kerosene lamps illuminating things and a Jonesy Norris rigged-up generator backfiring and choogling along keeping the beer box chilled.  Even without power Buzzy never closed and continued serving the community in his own way  – with cold beer and warm hospitality!

That particular issue of the Enterprise also had some other items worth checking out such as a letter to the editor from Beth McCoy on Local Heroine Mistress Margaret Brent (click here) and Charlie Moore’s obit (click here.)

The movie Ice Storm came out in 97 and as advertised featured “middle class families experimenting with casual sex and substance abuse.” Seemed only appropriate that Frank was featured on the soundtrack.
