Caught the Cal Ripken special on ESPN last night and in the words of Chris Farley
via GIPHY
It brought some nice memories of Cal, the Orioles and baseball in general at a much needed time to reflect on something pleasant for a change..
Found this USA Today article discussing it (click here.) Here is an excerpt from that article talking about Cal’s reaction in the bottom of the 5th inning when the game was declared official and he had broken Lou Gerhg’s record for most consecutive games played.
In the following video you can see Cal giving his Dad, Cal Sr., a thumbs up at the 6:52 mark. (Cal taking a lap around the field is shown on the second video following this one.) Note that the ESPN announcers for the game do not say a word the entire time of the celebration, something they won an Emmy for. Proves that sometimes, make that most times, silence really IS golden.. Good advice.
PS: Another hi lite for me was seeing Earl Weaver at the 2:53 mark as it made me smile and recall him and his tenure as manager of the O’s back in the day. Yes, those were the days my friend. We thought, well you know.
