Dr. Bean – Pt. 2

I came upon some papers that my Mom had generated proposing that a statue be constructed and dedicated to Dr. Bean. In her letter here to Dr. Jarboe, she is trying to talk him into supporting her efforts and even suggested that he head up a fund raising committee.

Mom then included a sketch of her idea of what the statue would look like:

I recall Mom being on this Dr. Bean statue bandwagon for some time. However, it seemed that when the Shah’s decided to name their new medical building in Hollywood after Dr. Bean, she felt like her overall goal of honoring and remembering Dr. Bean had been accomplished.

I was at the Bean Building the other day and checked out their Dr. Bean photo montage on a ground floor wall (to the left as you walk in.) Couple photos here from that collection:

Dr. Bean’s Office on Great Mills Road Adjacent the Chancellor’s Run Intersection

Also on the Bean Building wall of honor to Dr. Bean was this photo of him and his 1913 classmates at the University of Maryland Medical School. Dr. Bean is 5th from the left and even though it may appear that he is holding a pistol in his left hand, a closer exam reveals that it is his stethoscope.

Also, since it looks like that that is a cadaver on the table in front of them, I’m thinking that this is some anatomy class photo. Note the scalpel in the second from the left doc’s hand. Skeleton in the background and the quote “Man’s usefulness endeth not in death” all would seem to confirm that it was an anatomy class photo.

Another observation about this photo: note that Dr. Bean’s first name is listed as “Jen” which was a nickname for his middle name Jenifer. (Contrary to my Mom showing his middle name as beginning with “H.”) The only other nicknamed person in the photo is “Chu” from Cuba.

Dr. Bean is buried at Holy Face Cemetery in Great Mills.

I found an excellent 1979 Enterprise article written by Richard Polk on Dr. Bean and his career (click here.) In the following excerpt from that article, Dr. Bean discusses a country store and describes how he came to purchase the above property in Great Mills where his house and office were located.

And since we’re talking medical profession things here, check out this musical remedy for what ails you:
