Tobacco Time

End of August, I always think about cutting tobacco as that seemed to be the time of year my Uncle Tinkie got around to cutting his crop. I remember asking Tinkie if he purposely waited until the hottest time of year to cut tobacco. Tinkie said something to the effect that “There ain’t no such thing as a good time to cut tobacco, so it doesn’t matter.” I guess there was some straight up Tinkie-logic in there somewhere, but it was lost on me.

On the topic of tobacco and its history in St. Mary’s County, in their Spring 2001 issue the Slackwater folks did a great job in relating several Oral Histories from folks who knew the subject very well.

One Chapter recorded Ridge/St. Inigoes’ resident Elsie Bean’s comments. Excerpt follows:

I found the original transcript of the interview with Mrs. Bean and here is what she had to say:

Can’t say that I miss anything about cutting tobacco. As Uncle Tinkie said “Ain’t no good time to cut tobacco.”

August song here from some singer named Taylor. She’s not bad and may just have a future in the music business if she sticks with it:
