How I Became “Great”

Yesterday when Pam and I entered Potomac Gardens and approached the bar, I immediately thought that the bar tender looked familiar.

I wondered “Now where do I know her from?”

I said to her “I think I know you.” She smiled and said “You do. You’re Uncle J.” It was then that I recognized Lucy, the mother of my great nephews Emerson and Wyatt Taylor.

When my sister Donna Jean and husband Jerry had Todd in 1977 that made me “Uncle J.” And when Lucy and Stephen had Emerson some 30 years later, that me Great Uncle J.

Obviously, I had not seen Lucy in several years, but it was a very nice surprise to meet up with her at the Potomac Gardens like we did. When Cousins Clyde and J.W. rolled in shortly after Pam and I got there, Lucy also recognized them from when she and my nephew Stephen ran Southridge Bar back in the day. It really is a very small world.

I dug out some old photos showing Lucy and Stephen escorting Emerson on his first visit to Buzzy’s Country Store. Here they are posing with Stephen’s Dad Jerry and Grandfather Buzzy.

I tried to come up with a caption for these photos having to do with “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.” However, the best I could do along those lines is the following where Lucy is with Donna and Jerry’s daughter (my niece and God daughter) Katie.

And speaking of Southridge, remember when Scott Boatman was trying to have Molly Hatchett play there?

Check out this Lucy tune from MH. (And please note that this tune has nothing to do with the above Lucy who made me great!)

Also, speaking of Donna and Jerry, I neglected to mention in yesterday’s listing of September Buzzy events that on 14 September they will be celebrating 50 years of marriage. Now that really IS something great!

O’s are on at 3 o’clock today playing the White Sox and Buzzy’s is open. The over/under on total runs scored in the game is at 9. If they hit the over (10 or more runs) and the O’s win, we’ll have a Labor Day drink to celebrate that! It’ll be great!
