Reminds me of a conversation I once had with my cousin the priest Father John. We were discussing Jesus and I made the comment that Jesus didn’t really seem to have much of a sense of humor. John pointed out to me the Wedding Feast of Cana where Mary comes to Him and says “They have run out of wine.” Jesus responds to her by saying “So, what do you want me to do about it?” (I think the the official translation sounded a little more polite as in Jesus asking “What wouldst thou have me do? My hour has not yet come.”
I remember telling John “That’s the best you can come with as an example of Jesus having a sense of humor – Him mouthing off to His mom?”
John said “You didn’t let me finish. The humor is in how Mary responds to Jesus. She simply ignores what He says, turns to the servants and says “Do whatever He tells you to do.” She knew Jesus was just joking around with her.”
That Jesus was a real cut up wasn’t He? Leads me to conclude that it was a good thing He didn’t quit His day job to become a comedian. He did, as they say, work in mysterious ways however.
