When I read that jazz drummer Roy Haynes died at the age of 99, my first thought was “At least he a made it into his 90’s.” With the exception of Ringo, sure seems that it’s usually the drummer of all those classic rock bands that punches out first and at a comparatively young age. Think John Bonham (32), Keith Moon (32) and Dennis Wilson (39.) Levon passed at 71 while Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts both managed to make it to 80.
With that in mind, check out Rick Beato’s listing of the best rock drum grooves. Good list with one minor exception: his Number 2 Bonham pick would be my Numero Uno. That tune always makes me wanna get up and do something. (Keep in mind that the older I get, the less I wanna do; but that song still makes me at least want to try and shake a tail feather.)
Plus, Fool in the Rain features some great lyrics too, a couple of which which I never knew until just now. The actual refrain is “Light of the love that I found.” I had always thought that it went “I like the love that I found.” Proof again that it is what you learn after you know everything that counts!
