Speaking of the coming Commanders/Cowboys football game this Sunday in Landover, it reminded me of going to a Cowboys-Skins game in RFK in 1995. It was the one and only football game that I ever saw in RFK but it was a memorable one.
My neighbor Jim Krumpke invited Shea and me to go with him to attend the game which the Redskins won in big upset against the heavily favored Cowboys. (As noted in the following, this Cowboy team would eventually go on to win the Super Bowl.)
I don’t recall much about the game as to who did what, but I do remember being in the lower deck where the place got rocking and bouncing up and down so much that I worried “Man, I hope this bad boy doesn’t collapse on us.” When you hear stories told of RFK actually vibrating and shaking when the fans were riled up, I can vouch for it as being a truism.
I remember too that Jim had just gotten a flip phone and as we drove down the road after the game, he called his brother Carl out in Texas to rub it in. I remember being impressed with this use of technology but thinking “Who would want to carry a phone around with them?” Jim’s brother Carl was not too happy with the result of the game but he did manage to congratulate Jim and say “Good game. Get you next time.”
Note that the following year, the Redskins had another memorable victory over the Cowboys in RFK as they played and won the last game ever played at RFK. I found a good video on it (click here.)
As for present day, here is a good article in today’s Washington Post on the current status of trying to rebuild a stadium complex at the RFK site (click here.) (If the Post payroll nails you, try here instead.)
When I heard this nice tune playing at Sheetz as I gassed up yesterday, I Shazammed it to find out who it was. Check it out.
