Got a couple of Twofers for you today.
First off, allow me to preface all this by saying that I still don’t know the differentiation between a coincidence and an irony (click here for that discussion if you are curious.) However, one or the other of those just happened to me as I was cruising around the WWW motorway.
MSN had this click bait item titled “14 Songs from the 60’s and 70’s That Were Huge.” It suckered me in and I was surprised to see that Number 2 on their list was Indian Reservation by Paul Revere and the Raiders. Turns out that this tune was their biggest selling hit. (In case you’re wondering, as I was, what other hits they had, their Greatest Hits album includes Hungry, Not Your Stepping Stone, Kicks and Just Like Me, all of which I thought were much better than “Indian Reservation.” (Later post-Raiders, their lead singer Mark Lindsay had a big hit with “Arizona” another tune I could take or leave.
Ok, so what’s so coincidental and/or ironic about any of this? Patience young grasshopper, and allow me to explain.
I have been watching and enjoying the 3-season Netflix series “Loudermilk.” The anti-hero of the show is Sam Loudermilk who is a self-described asshole. However, despite that major character flaw of his, I found myself liking him as he stumbles thru life sober and semi-sensitive to the needs and feelings of others around him. (Leads me to think that maybe I like him because I see some of myself in him!)
All that said, when I learned just now that the author of “Indian Reservation” was a songwriter by the name J.D. Loudermilk I caught a gear and thought “Now that’s something! What are the odds of that with a last name like Loudermilk?” Turns out J.D. also wrote “Tobacco Road.” Another twofer, here are the Nashville Teens, a British group with an American name.
