The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC), has recently released their Buy Local Guide for the 2025 season.
The Guide is an overview of programs and shops that offer fruits, vegetables and other goods available throughout our region. In particular, it showcases our four St. Mary’s County Farmers Markets as follows:
Note that our South County Homegrown Market located in Hermanville is now open on Saturdays 9 – 1. Trossbach’s Produce Stand, located just down the road a piece from Buzzy’s Country Store, will be opening later this spring.
As for what is in season and when these items are available at the Markets, check out this nice little guide from “Visit St. Mary’s:”
First recorded by the Will Bradley Trio in 1940, Down the Road A Piece features lyrics that reference the drummer Ray”Mac” McKinley, bass player “Doc” Goldberg and pianist Freddie “Slack.” The irony is that the band’s namesake Will Bradley did not play on this tune.
I first heard the song as covered by the Stones on their third album titled “The Rolling Stones,- Now!” Mick changed the musician-referenced lyrics to Chuck’s version of the tune (clichttps://youtu.be/kRCgPr-Xgzo?si=wiFBqBzrkPiS_KIMk here.) Here then is the original recording of it by the Will Bradley Trio. Be sure to stay for the whistling solo at 2:10.
Video-wise however, this Amos Milburn live version in 1954 is pretty good too. Amos chose to stick with the original lyrics.
