Mid-April Not So Civil Thoughts

Someone in Buzzy’s Country Store recently made a comment “This has got to be the most divided that our country has ever been.” I resisted the urge to ask why they think that is and just who is to blame for it being so divided. However, I took the high road instead by simply saying “I don’t know. That Civil War had over 600,000 folks get killed. That was a little worse wouldn’t you say?”

This came to my mind just yesterday because mid-April has more than a few historically significant Civil War events.

The War itself officially commenced at Fort Sumter on 12 April 1861.

Not only did the beginning of the Civil War go down in April, but also, it’s unofficial conclusion was on 9 April1865 with Lee’s surrender to Grant.

Following Lee’s surrender, less than a week later Lincoln was shot on the 14th and died on 15 April.

Music-wise, only one song to be played here right?

A little music trivia for you:

It is fitting that The Band’s “Last Waltz” was at Winterland, because that was also the site of their very first concert as The Band on April 17, 1969. Unlike the Civil War mid-April events, this one was a good thing!
