It’s a Wonderful Life (If You Don’t Drown)

In his Monday Buzzy Podcast with us, Joe Norris discussed at the 13.00-15:00 mark (click here to re-listen to it) nearly drowning when he was 7 years old and how his cousin rescued him.

When Joe revealed that, I started to make a comment about how similar that was to the scene in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life where George saves his brother Harry from drowning. While I could not find a clip of that scene from the original movie, I did land on this Wiki entry describing it as follows:

It also reminded me of my brotherly near drowning experience when Stevie and I were kids. We were swimming in the mouth of Harry James Creek which had a very narrow but deep opening with quickly moving water when the tide was running.

Stevie was swimming across the narrow channel and was out in the middle of it when he faked drowning and started calling out for help. I knew he was faking because he had done this previously. And while I knew that Stevie was joking around, our pet dog Teddy there with us did not know it.

Teddy jumped in and doggie paddled over to Stevie whereupon he began pawing him and in his own way tried to rescue Stevie. Instead of helping Stevie however, Teddy was now pushing him under the rushing tide. The joke became real.

Stevie became very serious as he yelled “Help! J. Scott this dog is drowning me. Get him the hell off of me.” I swam out and got between Stevie and Teddy and assured Teddy that Stevie was ok. Stevie recovered and swam to shore.

With the problem solved, we laughed about it and gave Teddy a hug and a rub for trying to be such a good guard dog. However, it was Stevie who concluded by telling him “Thanks for trying to save my life old boy, but next time just throw me a rope.”

My friend Mike Jordan was in Buzzy’s Country Store yesterday celebrating his 55th birthday.

As we were talking about Coors beer, Mike introduced me to this Johnny Paycheck tune:
