Additionally, O Tannenbaum has a Maryland connection that also had nothing to do with Christmas. Somewhere along the way, a poem about Maryland seceding from the Union at the start of the Civil War was set to O Tannenbaum. Eventually it became the Maryland State song until 2021 when it was officially “retired” (click here.) A replacement State Song has yet to be determined. You’ve heard of “A Horse With No Name” right? Well, Maryland is currently a state with no song.
