Pam and I caught the Hugh Jackman/Kate Hudson Song Sung Blue movie the other night and I was surprised at how good it was and how much I enjoyed it. I won’t go into details about it, but if you want to get a little insight about it, you can watch for free the original documentary that the current film is based upon (click here.) (If nothing else catch the ending starting at the 1:20:40 mark.)
Of course you get a huge dose of Neil music in both movies which I am good with because I like Neil and most of his stuff. (Don’t get me started on Sweet Caroline however.) I still have a couple of his early albums stashed in the milk crates in the attic.
Regarding the not-so-fond-of-Neil side of the equation, I recall reading one music critic who wrote something to the effect “You remember Neil Diamond. He’s the part of The Last Waltz where you can take a break and go to the bathroom or get something to eat.”
Picking a favorite tune of Neil’s is tough to do, but I always turn up the volume whenever I hear the opening of this one. In the following video, Neil talks about how he came to write it based on having attended a revival meeting. In this performance, he also does some of the original album version which was trimmed down for the subsequent 45 hit record.
Buzzy’s “Sudsy Sundays” always had a revivalist vibe about them albeit with no sermons nor songs, just beer, wine and liquor! Praise the Lord!
