A camping visitor to Buzzy’s Country Store informed me that he was originally from Cortez, Colorado. When I told him that I had been to Denver and asked where Cortez was from there, he informed me that it was in Southwest Colorado a little north of Four Corners.
Quick geography lesson for those of you not familiar with the Four Corners’ states, here they are:
And here is Cortez in relation to the Four Corners.
My visitor and I briefly discussed Four Corners. However, he really piqued my interest when he informed me that Cortez was semi-famous for a somewhat crazy 1959 U-2 landing incident. He encouraged me to google it and when I did so this popped up:
My visitor concluded by telling me that to this day, the Cortez Airport keeps their runway illuminated at night. For additional info on this (click here.)
Note that the more infamous U-2 incident occurred in 1960 when Gary Powers was shot down when flying over Russia (click here for that story.)
The band U2 has this tune from their upcoming new album. The description of the tune notes that the band members are “in a religious cult where the women do all the heavy lifting.” Nothing new about that eh?
