Visited Georgetown yesterday and took Grandson Shawn on tour of the University’s grounds:

Shawn In Front of Healy Hall

As we walked around the campus it brought back a memory for me that I had forgotten about.

Years ago Buzzy was scheduled to be operated on at Georgetown Hospital to relieve pressure on his brain stemming from subdura hematoma a condition that resulted from him having hit his head on different occasions.  On the morning of his surgery I made the trek to Georgetown and saw him before he went in to be operated on.  He seemed glad to see me and we chatted while the staff prepped him for the surgery which involved them drilling four holes the size of a quarter each into his skull.

As he was being wheeled out to the operating room, the Doctor performing the surgery called me aside and informed me that this was a tough surgery that he was about to perform and said “This is a difficult operation given the amount of blood on your father’s brain that we have to remove.   His heavy drinking complicates things because he has a tough recovery to make after the procedure.  We’re going to do the best we can, but I just wanted you to know that your father’s chances are 50-50 at best.  It could go either way.”

Shocked at these words, I then spent the next couple hours walking around the Georgetown campus imagining life without my Dad.  Because I had never before had to confront such thoughts, it was a little overwhelming.  I remember making my way through the campus crying and in a complete daze.

Fortunately, Buzzy survived the surgery and made a complete recovery.

Thus my little tour yesterday with Shawn was in complete contrast to the last time that I strolled the paths and grounds of Georgetown U in that  I actually enjoyed this trip.

Shawn and I did something yesterday that I did not do back when Buzzy had his surgery and that was to visit the Exorcist Stairs just off campus.  Here is a photo I took of Shawn on the steps and see if you don’t think that there is an eerie glow about him.

Only one song can follow right?
