Arsenic and Elderberry Wine

Here are two completely disparate events that crossed my path the past two days yet connected somehow.  In Wednesday’s Enterprise, Met Com published their annual water report and noted that the arsenic level here in the Piney Point area is 7.5 which is down a little from 8.1 a few years ago (click here for more info.)  EPA’s maximum level is 10.  So I guess the downward trend is a good sign even if the 7.5 level is the second highest in the County.  (St. Clements Shores is the highest with a 7.7 level.)  Met Com included the following note:

“While your drinking water meets EPA’s standard for arsenic, it does contain low
levels of arsenic. EPA’s standard balances the current understanding of arsenic’s possible health effects against the costs of removing arsenic from drinking water. EPA continues to research the health effects of low levels of arsenic, which is a mineral known to cause cancer in humans at high concentrations and is linked to other health effects such as skin damage and circulatory problems.”

Then yesterday at the Store I heard an old Elton John song on the radio that not only is a great song but also contains the line “The bottle went round like a woman down south.”  I “you tubed” it and had to smile when I found the following video.  (If you don’t recognize it, the film used in the video is from the movie Arsenic and Old Lace.)
