Ege’s Store – Captain Cook Pt. 1

On the Big Island in Hawaii earlier this month we spotted Captain Cook’s Memorial on a road map and set out to drive to it.  We drove to and thru the town named Capt. Cook but did not see any signs directing us to the Memorial.  I stopped at a little country store named Ege’s (left) to ask for directions.
Purchasing some snacks and drinks, I informed the lady behind the counter that I owned a little country store very similar to hers.  She laughed and asked the obvious question “So who’s watching the store while you are over here?”
Regarding getting to the Memorial, the lady informed me that it could not be reached by road, that you had to drive to the next town, double back down to the bay,  park and then hike a ways in to its location on the bay.   The lady also informed me that it was a lot of effort for very little to see.  Knowing that country store proprietors are always spot on with their advice, we passed on making the trip to the memorial.  However, I did enjoy my visit to Ege’s.  Next post I will discuss Capt. Cook.  Regarding  yesterday’s old house post, the house is on the left as you turn off Rt. 5 and head down Wynne Road.  Joe Rapp’s Triangle Tavern (discussed in a previous post), was later Hike and Louise’s and used to be  on the corner of 5 and Wynne Road.  Not sure when it was torn down.
