BUZZYBALL

I’m thinking about writing a book that combines baseball “stuff” with Buzzyisms.  Working title is Buzzyball and here is a sample of how it would unfold.  First the baseball incident:  Phillies’ pitcher Cole Hamels hit Nationals’ Bryce Harper with a pitch.  No big deal, as it happens often in baseball.  Except that after the game, when being interviewed by the press, Hamels divulged that he had meant to drill Harper.  And for that honest confession, Hamels received a 5 game suspension.  Weird aspect of it is that had Hamels maintained that it was an accident, that the ball slipped etc. nothing would have happened to him punishment-wise.  Bottom line, he got suspended not for what he did per se but for what he did after he hit Harper i.e. admitted that he had hit Harper on purpose.
Now the Buzzyball look at the incident.  Buzzy used to say “In life it’s not so much what you do that matters, but what you do after you did what you did.” This would definitely apply to Hamels’ post-pitch actions where he should have adhered to another Buzzyism: “When you get in trouble, remember that the fish didn’t get caught until he opened his mouth.”  I’m betting that Cole wishes he had followed that advice too.
