Old Movies

On Facebook’s You Know You’re From St. Mary’s When (click here) Frankie Tippett has posted several photo’s from old editions of local newspapers.  This one below of the Plaza Movie Theater in Lexington Park didn’t mean much to me until I looked closer to see the marque featuring Old Yeller.

Caption reads “Children Take in Movie…..

Old Yeller was the first real movie I saw at the Plaza. I say real because I vaguely recall my Mom taking my brother Steve and me to see some animated Lady and the Tramp and/or Bambi before she took us to catch Old Yeller.

Old Yeller was released in 1957 and starred Fess Parker whom we all knew as Davy Crockett.  (I still hum the “king of the wild frontier” theme song whenever I hear mention of Davy.)   Old Yeller was the first movie to ever make me cry.   I still remember coming out of the theater crying, getting in the car and riding back home feeling so sad that Yeller had to bite the bullet like he did.  I wouldn’t go so far to say that it was the worst moment of my childhood as is stated here but it was up there.  This from IMDB:

And because I have Frankie Tippett to thank for this little walk down movie memory lane here’s a movie-related video for you based on De Palma’s Body Double.
