Stiffy and Max

While in Terre Haute, I Googled “Country Stores” to see what if any such stores were around the area.  Somewhere in my searches I found the story of John Heinl and his pet bulldog Stiffy Green.

Here is the story:

Since Highland Lawn Cemetery was not far from where I was staying in Terre Haute and I had a couple hours to kill Saturday morning before the Jubilee ceremony I drove out to the cemetery.

It was well worth the visit as I had the place to myself and enjoyed the solitude of tromping around the old grounds looking for Mr. Heinl’s masoleum.  The fact that Stiffy was nowhere to be found and is now housed in a local museum was a little bit of a let down but still I enjoyed my time in Highland Lawn.

Somewhere in my grave yard meanderings there, I found the grave of Max Ehrmann author of Desiderata which I have mentioned previously here on the Buzzyblog.  Ehrmann was from Terre Haute and has a statue dedicated to him downtown.  Here is a photo of an angel sculpture guarding his resting place.

For your 4th of July amusement I will leave you with the first verse from Ehrmann’s classic advice:
