A Very Special Christmas

Dumb Christmas joke for you:

How come Santa never gets sick?
Because he has good elf care.

Yesterday’s post where I mentioned Madonna’s Santa Baby led me to learn that she recorded that tune as part of the A Very Special Christmas series of records.  Madonna’s version appeared on the original compilation released in 1987.  Also, on that original album was Bon Jovi’s cover of the Clarence Carter song Back Door Santa which I’ll discuss in a moment.

A Very Special Christmas is an ongoing fund raiser for Special Olympics.  To date over $100 million has been raised for Special Olympics.  As music benefits go, it is one of if not the most successful effort yet.

As for Clarence’s Back Door Santa, it was eventually replaced on the first Very Special Christmas album re-issues with Bon Jovi’s I Wish  Every Day Could Be Like Christmas.  Somewhere along the line, Back Door was deemed a little too racy and had to go.  I’m betting that it had something to do with a very X rated, “special” explanation of what a “Back Door Santa” means.  You can find that explanation here but be forewarned, it’s going to forever change the way you think about the song. Ho, ho, ho!)
