Christmas Cookies

Remember when the reference to cookies was to something that you eat versus today’s PC- oriented definition of unwanted files on your computer?

My Mom was in Buzzy’s Country Store the other day when she spied the Santa Cookie Jar I have on the counter.  She commented “I used to have a cookie jar just like that.”  I looked closely at her to see if she was smiling and pulling my leg or if she was being serious.  (At this point in both our lives I never know with her anymore.)

But seeing how she was examining the cookie jar, I got the impression that she really didn’t remember giving it to me years ago.  I said “Mom that’s the same one.  You gave it to me years ago.”  She replied “Oh.  I wondered where it went.”  We both laughed.

On my ride home that evening thinking about that exchange, it made me think of the whole Christmas and cookies deal.  You hear stories of Christmas Cookie parties this time of year, folks spending hours baking a gazillion cookies, folks giving plates full of decorated cookies as presents, kids leaving cookies out for Santa etc..  Cookies are everywhere it seems at Christmas time.

As for why there is so much cookie fascination at this time of year, I found this explanation:

I’ll let you in on a little secret. Leading up to the Buzzy Christmas party I will stock the Mom’s/Buzzy cookie jar with some plain-Jane-off-the-shelf cookies.  Later, at the Buzzy Party, I “transfer” a couple of cookies from the plates that people bring for the party to Mom’s cookie jar for future digestion.  For those of you cookie monsters out there, now’s the time to raid the Buzzy cookie jar.

When it comes to songs about Christmas Cookies George had it straight (in more ways than one.)
