Post Memorial Day Thoughts

Just to follow up on yesterday’s post about Audie Murphy I will do a Two-fer Tuesday today about a couple vet-related subjects.

First, lets return to Audie and his story.

While I was vaguely aware of him as a war hero and a movie actor,  I did not know anything about his personal life and how very sad it was.  Several accounts refer to Audie as a “Tragic Hero” and with good reason.  His life was a constant struggle from his childhood as one of 11 children born to poor sharecropping parents to his death at 46 years of age in a plane crash.  In between he suffered from what we now call PTSD and Survivors’ Guilt.  (To read more about Audie’s life story (click here.))  This video will also explain some of what he went through.)

Audie’s efforts to combat PTSD brings me to a second vet-related matter that I would like you to put on your calendar for the month of June.

The 22 March for Life is an organization that raises money and awareness about the suicide-related deaths (22 a day) of military, police, firefighters and first responders.  My good friend Brian Barnhill is on the 22 March for Life Board of Directors and has helped organize a fund raiser at Buzzy’s Country Store to be held on 22 June.

So PTSD which in this circumstance stands for Please Save The Date and plan on dropping by and making a donation to a very worthwhile cause.  Gary Rue will be here to play some music for the event.
