Everything Dies And That’s A Fact

Grave sites of Doug, David and Tommy

Attending Tommy Courtney’s funeral, and hearing Father Karl talk of death and resurrection, the refrain from Bruce’s “Atlantic City” tune kept running thru my mind:

Well, now everything dies baby that’s a fact, But maybe everything that dies someday comes back.”

But when I went looking for Bruce’s version of the song, I found this cover of it by The Band. It was no big surprise to me to find that I liked their version more so than Bruce’s. Give a listen and see what you think. Catch Garth on the accordion fills and solo’s.

The opening line reference to the killing of the “Chicken Man” was about a Mafia-related execution in Philadelphia that took place on 15 March 1981 (click here.) Yet another “Beware the Ides of March” example! Bruce’s lyrics follow:

Just think, with all the talk of making either Daylight or Standard time permanent, this could be the last time that we have had to mess with changing our clocks. Everything dies baby! (Then again there has been talk of doing this for the last 50 years so who knows? Lots of talk with little action seems to be in the DNA of our current business model so standby for maybe no change(s) at all (click here.))

But speaking of “This could be the Last Time,” a little tease below for you because I have something on Mick tee’d up for tomorrow here on the Buzzyblog.

In the mean time (see what I did there?) check out him and the Stones on their second appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1965. Notice how nattily dressed they are wearing their buttoned up shirts and sports jackets. Here is the rest of the story on how all that came to be:

Here they are looking clipped and sartorially spiffy:

Back to where I began, when I first saw it, I thought that a scrap of paper was resting atop Tommy’s grave site.

As I looked closer however, I saw that it was an oyster shell. To whomever left that there – good on you!
