Just My Type

On this day in 1868 a patent was granted to Christopher Sholes for inventing the typewriter. For that story and how the Qwerty keyboard came to be (click here.)

Although Sholes gets most of the credit for inventing what we know of as a typewriter, some form of it had been around for many years prior to his efforts (click here). However, it was Sholes who first came up with the Qwerty keyboard and hence he is regarded as the inventor of the typewriter. (Not to be confused with the dude who came up with those shoe inserts.)

Reminds me of when I went for my first job interview as a Supply Clerk on Base and one of the job requirements was being able to type 30 words a minute. During the interview, my boss-to-be Aileen Smith asked me “Do you know how to type?” I held up my left hand, flexed my fingers and simply said “ASDF.”

Later on after I had gotten the job and she walked by my desk to see me two fingering my way thru a requisition, she said “I thought you said that you knew how to type.” I replied “No ma’am. I never said I could type. I just told you the only 4 letters that I knew.” She replied, “Don’t worry, you’ll learn.” And I did. (Although thru the years I often told folks that I am a Florida typist in that I just pluck away and hope that I land on the right Keys!)

Following my Sailing Buzzyblog the other day, Brady sent me this nice video and tune that is worth checking out.

PS – as for my sports gambling discussions of yesterday, note that I went 0 for 3. The O’s came up short and Oklahoma won and covered. Guess that I will have to stick to my day job of selling beer, bait and ice!
