Bernie

At the one year anniversary of his father Bernie’s passing, Jon Sevel posted this very nice tribute:

It was Bernie’s Grandfather Nathan Shuman who started Buzzy’s Country Store. Bernie and Jon visited Buzzy’s in 2021 which I discussed here (click here.)

Songwriter Bernie Taupin came to my mind just yesterday at breakfast when Gary and Paul Gelrud were discussing their Dad Jacks’ business partner Ray Sachs. They both remembered their father often saying that he and Ray had never had an argument in all their years of working together and being friends.

It made me think of one of the final scenes in the movie Rocket Man where it was noted that Elton and Bernie could make the same claim.

I saw an article somewhere that had Bernie saying he thought that “Candle in the Wind” was their best and most perfect tune. But if I had to list one of their tunes as my favorite, the following always reminds me of my brother Steve who passed away in 2011.

I always liked the tune, but it came to mean even more to me when I learned that Bernie wrote a final verse for it that Elton had elected not to use.

Given that my brother Steve served in Viet Nam, Daniel became even more personal for me. To this day, I still tear up whenever I hear it.
