As I’ve discussed previously (click here) my Grandfather Harry Raley purchased the current Buzzy’s Country Store from Nathan Shuman’s son Michael in 1945.
I found this picture of a store in D.C. at a nice photo site (shorpy.com) and wondered if perhaps there wasn’t a connection with the names being so close. (Recently I have been in contact with some of Nathan’s descendants and hope to learn more about the Shumans and how Buzzy’s Country Store came to be.)
The commentary below the picture talks to the Hitler and Mussolini posters in the window but the sign that caught my eye is to the left and advertises for Prince Albert. Yes, they had Prince Albert in the can as did Buzzy’s back in the day.
Growing up as kids at Buzzy’s, my brother Steve and I would often answer the phone only to hear the prank caller asking either for Prince Albert or if we had pigs feet. Unfortunately our responses to the callers were never as funny as the one given in the link here (click here) but we did make the caller aware that we had heard the joke(s) before!
An ironic footnote – in looking for the link on Prince Albert prank calls, I found that today it also is the name of a type of body piercing in a rather delicate place. Makes me wonder if any of the piercing shops ever receive any pranks calls asking if they “Have Prince Albert in the …..”
Thanks for the photo – however, even though the family settled in DC area, that one is not us! My grandfather – Mike's brother – moved to Georgetown in the 30s after selling his neighboring store. BTW – my father had always told us he was born in the Scotland Post Office that was located in the store (in 1916).
