Chinaman's Chance

I mentioned Brady posing in front of the Chinaman’s Hat Island on Oahu click here, and it reminded me of the expression “Chinaman’s Chance in Hell.”

I heard an explanation of the phrase from a tour guide who explained how Chinese laborers worked on constructing the first railroad.  Because they were small, the Chinese were used to ignite dynamite in the side of the mountains while they were dangled from a rope.  The plan involved the Chinaman igniting the dynamite and then being pulled up out of harm’s way before the dynamite blew.  Needless to say it was a dicey plan and many Chinamen did not make it to safety before the dynamite blew.  Hence the expression  click here.
However, this book (left) gives a little different perspective by positing that the Chinese were not the victims that they have been portrayed as being click here. Sometimes though, when it comes to accepting these revisionist history accounts, they don’t stand a Chinaman’s Chance of being believed.
